Museo Diocesano de Arte Barroco en San Ignacio Guazú
Ubicado en el antiguo colegio indígena de la época jesuítica. Los objetos en exhibición son esculturas realizadas en madera policromada talladas por los guaraníes en el siglo XVII.
Solo recorrer su hermoso y verde jardín entrelazado por calzadas de adoquines y arcos de piedra producen una sensación de tranquilidad instantánea. Por algo es elegido como lugar de retiro espiritual por mucha gente. Quién mejor le puede guiar es Estela Cardozo, que lleva veinte años cuidando y explicando el museo a los viajeros con voz tranquila y extrema paciencia.
Aquí se exhiben, en cuatro salas, 30 imágenes talladas en madera policromada que son notables representaciones del barroco hispano-guaraní. Los temas de las salas son: La Creación, La Redención, La Historia de Cristo en la Iglesia y La Compañía de Jesús.
Es un deleite observar de cerca el detalle de las manos de las esculturas: se ven hasta las venas y los poros de la piel o el sutil movimiento de las túnicas. Además es un museo vivo. Varias salas siguen ocupadas por estudiantes y jóvenes aprendiendo las artes del tallado, la pintura y el canto alrededor de un maestro al igual que hace cinco siglos.
Derlis Cardozo, maestro de tallado en madera transmite a sus estudiantes el mismo conocimiento que tenían los guaraníes en la época de las misiones. “Formamos jóvenes para que descubran a su artista interior y sean multiplicadores de la cultura y así perdure”, explica el profesor.

Just wandering through its beautiful green garden intertwined by cobblestone driveways and stone arches creates an instant sense of tranquility. This space is chosen as a place of spiritual retreat by many people. Who can best guide you is Estela Cardozo, who has been caring for and explaining the museum to travelers for twenty years with a calm voice and extreme patience. Here are exhibited, in four rooms, 30 images carved in polychrome wood that are remarkable representations of the Hispano-Guarani Baroque.
The themes of the rooms are: Creation, Redemption, The Story of Jesus Christ in the Church and The Order of Jesus. It is a delight to observe closely the detail of the hands of the sculptures: you can see even the veins and pores of the skin or the subtle movement of the robes. It is also a living museum. Several rooms are still occupied by students and young people learning the arts of carving, painting and singing around a teacher just like five centuries ago. Derlis Cardozo, master of wood carving, transmits to his students the same knowledge that the Guarani had at the time of the missions. «We train young people to discover their inner artist and be multipliers of culture and thus endure,» explains the teacher.
