Museo Diocesano de Arte Jesuítico Guaraní de Santa María de Fe
En la plaza central del pueblo, llamada Mariscal Estigarribia, está el principal atractivo cultural de la localidad, el museo que más preciado arte jesuita alberga en la zona. Solo poner un pie en el interior, con su techo de tacuarita y grandes tejas, las gordas paredes, el suelo de cerámica y el fuerte olor a humedad y antigüedad, ya te transporta automáticamente al pasado. Está en la antigua «Casa de los Indios» de la misión que data de 1672, justo al costado del templo.
El que mejor cuenta la particular historia de este museo es Isabelino Martínez, docente y master de gestión educativa, “nacido y mal criado” en Santa María y también responsable “ad honorem”, guardia y salvador de las 57 estatuas de santos que hay dentro y otras cientos de obras de valor incalculable preservadas a su insistencia y tenacidad. Al fin y al cabo maneja un museo sin ningún presupuesto, ni público ni privado, ni estatal ni local. Por eso la ayuda de los visitantes es fundamental, pues de ella depende mantener la limpieza, restaurar los tejados y las columnas o las paredes deterioradas.
Antes de la apertura del museo la imaginería estaba siendo blanco de robos de cualquier pasajero. “Cualquier amigo de la autoridad de turno se llevaba”, recuerda Isabelino. Aprovechaban que la gente aquí no conocía el valor de las obras para llevárselas y hoy muchas estarán en casas privadas del mundo entero. “El museo nace en 1976 para salvar este patrimonio en medio de la dictadura que perseguía a los jesuítas”, explica el experto. Fondos de la fundación Germano Paraguaria y de una pareja de la ciudad de Hays en Kansas (Estados Unidos) ayudó también en la compra y restauración del edificio para el museo. Desde entonces, Hays es ciudad hermana con Santa María y por eso una calle principal lleva el nombre de Ciudad de Hays.

Before the opening of the museum, the imagery was being robbed by any passenger. «Any friend of the authority on duty would get along,» recalls Isabelino. They took advantage of the fact that people here did not know the value of the works that take with them and today many will be in private homes around the world. «The museum was born in 1976 to save this heritage in the midst of the dictatorship that persecuted the Jesuits,» explains the expert. Funds from the Germano Paraguaria Foundation and a couple from the city of Hays in Kansas (United States) also helped in the purchase and restoration of the building for the museum. Since then, Hays has been a sister city to Santa María and for this reason a main street is named City of Hays.
